Bon LIVE: a festival to produce a sense of community in Tsukuba
With University of Tsukuba and other research institutions, Tsukuba city is known as an academic and international city. Every year Tsukuba welcomes tens of thousands of newcomers not only from other parts of Japan but also from abroad. However, most of them leave Tsukuba after several years of their study or work, never having a sense of belonging to Tsukuba.
Hoping to create an occasion every Tsukuba resident gather, interact with each other, and thus develop a sense of community in Tsukuba, we, the Bon LIVE organizing committee, started Bon LIVE in 2015, based on the image of bon odori, a Japanese traditional summer community festival. In Bon LIVE, aiming to entertain people from different cultures and different generations, we introduce new bon dances to popular songs and invite local and students’ groups to exhibit their prowess. Besides, prior to the festival we have sessions to instruct dance and teach Japanese culture to international students and local children. Promoting active cultural exchanges through Bon LIVE, we attempt to make it possible for every Tsukuba resident to feel the city like home.
