Biopsychosocial Interventions for People with Dementia

Summary

Compared to other countries, in Japan there is less research on non-pharmacological interventions for people with dementia (PWD), particularly based on structured designs. Our goal is to establish an authentic biopsychosocial approach to people with dementia. From this perspective, our research group aims to develop and examine non-pharmacological interventions for PWD (psychological perspective). Such interventions consider the person’s cognitive condition and their experiences, their social interaction with others including activities in their homes and communities (social perspective), in addition to impairment due to organic changes (biological perspective). Regarding social interactions, we value perspectives from caregivers, neighbors and other people who live with or meet people with dementia. We also value their understanding of dementia, and their own quality of life (QOL).

Considering the above points, specifically, we work to develop and examine programs of cognitive stimulation for PWD’s cognitive maintenance and their QOL as well as that of staff members. We study methods for preventing or decreasing challenging behavior (behavioral and psychological symptoms of dementia: BPSD) and improving the QOL of the people with dementia and people around them. In addition to intervention’s methods, we try to develop assessment tools for them. We also develop programs and tools for forming desirable regional and social attitudes towards PWD and dementia itself.

We have already developed a Japanese version of Cognitive Stimulation Therapy (from the UK), a protocol and program of intervention for challenging behaviors based on applied behavior analysis. Moreover, we have developed a Japanese version of an international scale of QOL for PWD (DEMQOL, the UK), a Japanese version of the Alzheimer’s Disease Knowledge Scale (from the USA) used for understanding dementia and changing social attitudes, and proposed a social perspective of dementia and PWD. We will systemize each approach, considering the overall structure, to practice them in communities.
