Integrated Understanding of the Effects of Ocean Acidification on Marine Ecosystems
This research unit aims to obtain an integrated understanding of marine life and ecosystems through collaborative research from the interdisciplinary research network among the Shimoda Marine Research Center and other research organizations from both inside and outside Japan. From a standpoint of basic science, this research unit supports research strategy against ocean acidification, an SDG that Japan actively declared support for at the United Nations Conference to Support the Implementation of Sustainable Development Goal 14. Specifically, our unit members collaborate with both domestic and international research groups for survey of ecosystem changes (species and numbers) and the effects of ocean acidification on the gene expression and physiological activity (changes in gene expression, biological environment adaptation), by using the coastal field of Shimoda and Shikine Island, and CO2 seeps that have been discovered in the world so far. We also seek peer opinions when appropriate from JAMSTEC, the University of Plymouth, Xiamen University, and other institutions inside and outside of the Japan involved in the activities closely related to that of this unit, also discussing on how to link scientific output to policy and aiming an international contributions from the standpoint of basic science.
